Find the right trail to Skalvattnet
There is two trail that lead you up to the mountain Arefjallet and the lake Skalvattnet. One of them is not connected with the valley and the terrain up to that trail are really step. When I arrive to that place it looks not so inviting. The second trail is the one to use if you want to hike north to the mountains around Skalvattnet. I drive back in 6 kilometer and find a place to park my car.
The hike begins
I think I started my hike from Skalmodal close to midnight. I have parked my car a little bit below the trail so I have to wander in the light of my headlamp towards the trail, I found the trail on a mire a little bit up on the mountain. The trail ends at the lake Skalvattnet and thats where I pitch my tent close to a beautiful river. I boil a cup of chocolate and bread a sandwich before I fall a sleep.
Rainy and overcast day
Next morning the rain poring down and the mist swept over the mountaintops. I make some porridge and pick some cloudberry outside my tent and a boil a cup of coffee. It teasted lovely especially when I am surrounded with such a beautiful nature. After breakfast I spend some time photograph the river and mountains.
Hike along Skalvattnet
Soon I started my hike along the shoreline of Skalvattnet. It was a misstake to follow the Shoreline, the vegetation was sometime very dense and the mountain Aamere sloped steep down in to Skalvattnet with wet big rocks. It would have been better to hike up on Aamere and follow the ridge line. On a few places I found it easier to wade out in the lake instead of try to pass the rocky terrain.
Even if the hike was challenging it was very beautiful.
I paus at this little mountain birch and enjoyed the gorgeous view of the mirroring mountains and refill my energy with som snacks.
Wildflowers and green Moorland
I was so grateful when I come through to a green moorland with yellow wildflower. I cooking some lunch and a big cup of coffee.
Even on this side of Skalvattnet if was a really nice river that stream down from the mountain out in the lake Skalvattnet. The water have sculpt the rock in beautiful formation and canyons. I was a little bit tired so the photos didn’t turn out that well.
Time for a good night sleep
Soon it was time to go to bed and the campsite wasn’t that bad. Great view over the valley and the ground was flat like a lawn.
Time to hike future into the mountains
The next day I start my hike up on Arefjället. A Golden plover give me some company along the way. I have some plans to hike down to the cabin in Arevattnet but the view was so gorgeous and the weather was nice so I decided to spend the night up on the mountain. Looks promising for some photogaphy, really wonderful views in all directions.
Can you spot the little cabin in Arevattnet?
– Let’s the light guide you.
Experience with a Golden Eagle
When I was out hiking I got a great experience that I will always remember. A Golden Eagle take off and fly away very close to me, it was a fantastic experience. The Eagle circulated over the valley before it fly away over the mountains.
Light on the mountaintop Storburstinden
Light coming through window of clouds from setting sun over the mountains in Norway. I try to capture these moments when the shadowed mountains get lightened by the sun.
Later this evening the clouds lifted a little and I have the great joy to view some noctilucent clouds over the mountains. Really beautiful. I didn’t regret to stay up one the mountain this evening.
Early in the morning I get some lovely morning light over the mountain and I manage to capture the view in a panorama. I merge six vertical photos into this giant panorama. On the right side you can see Rumsietjahke and Bealkiestjålhte in the Södra Storfjället massif and on the very left you see Giebnievaartoe.
Hiking on Arefjället on my way back
I choose to follow Arefjället on my way back. It was a really nice mountain for hiking and I recommend you to hike over Arefjället if you have plans for hiking to Arevattnet. This time it was no problem to pass the river at my first campsite but I guess it can be more difficult early in the spring.
Vapsälven, beautiful river that streams towards Atlanten
I end the trip with some Bullens Korv at the Vapsälven. One thing that makes this river a little bit special is that it stream towards Atlanten.
The river has not been affected by any hydropower and the river is also known for the large trout that wander up the stream from Atlanten.
